While the current focus on cutting tailpipe emissions, brake dust is flying under the radar.
A new study from the University of Southampton has shown that toxic particles from some brake pads can be more harmful than diesel exhaust, especially due to high copper content. These tiny particles are easily inhaled and can damage human lung cells.
Brake dust makes up around 20% of traffic-related air pollution, and as EVs get heavier, brake and tyre wear emissions could increase even further.
